- A veteran television journalist and war correspondent, novelist and non-fiction author and film/video producer. Worked in Australia, SE Asia, the Middle East, UK and North America.
- 1992-2006: international corporate and documentary video production services for the Finnish elevator multinational, KONE, along with a client list in Hong Kong and SE Asia that included American Express, Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong Tourist Authority, Hilton International, Hong Kong Government and Ritz Carlton Hotels and Resorts.
- He has also had extensive filming and production experience in China. Derek with his wife Jan have lived in Hong Kong for 20 years managing the first Business Traveller Asia magazine.
